Rajasthan can be visited all year round, but each season offers a very different experience.
October to March — peak season
Sunny days and cool evenings make this the most comfortable time to explore forts, deserts and wildlife parks. December and January nights can get cold, especially in Jaisalmer’s desert camps — pack a warm jacket.
Festivals to look out for: Diwali, the Pushkar Camel Fair (around Kartik Purnima), Jaisalmer Desert Festival and the Jaipur Literature Festival.
April to June — summer
Temperatures in the desert can soar. Plan sightseeing early in the morning and late in the evening, or head to Mount Abu, Rajasthan’s only hill station. Summer is also a good time for tiger sightings in Ranthambore, as animals gather near waterholes.
July to September — monsoon
Udaipur and Mount Abu turn lush and green, lakes fill up and hotel rates drop. Most national park core zones close during the monsoon.
Our recommendation
- First-time visitors: October – March.
- Budget travellers & photographers: July – September in Udaipur.
- Wildlife lovers: March – June for Ranthambore.
