Few experiences in India match the thrill of seeing a wild tiger walk past your vehicle in Ranthambore National Park. Here is how to plan it well.
Gypsy or canter?
- Gypsy (6 seats): more intimate, quieter and more flexible. Best for couples and photographers.
- Canter (around 20 seats): open-top bus, more economical and great for families and groups.
Understanding the zones
The park is divided into numbered safari zones. Zones are allotted by the Forest Department when permits are booked, and each zone has its own terrain — lakes, grasslands or rocky hills. Tigers roam freely across zones, so no zone guarantees a sighting; a patient driver and naturalist matter more than the zone number.
Best time to visit
- October–November: lush, green and pleasant.
- December–February: cool mornings, great light — carry warm layers for open vehicles.
- March–June: hot, but water sources shrink and sightings often improve.
- Monsoon (roughly July–September): core zones typically close.
Booking tips
- Book permits early, especially for weekends, Christmas and New Year.
- Keep ID proof handy — the same ID used for booking is checked at the gate.
- Do at least two safaris to improve your chances.
- Wear earthy colours, keep noise low and never ask the driver to go off-track.
